Koggala is a lake, a very long beach and a handful of things genuinely worth leaving the pool for. This is the honest list, including the one everybody gets wrong.
Most lists of things to do in Koggala are padded with whatever is within an hour's drive. This is the short version — what we actually send our own guests to, in the order we would do them, with the timing that matters.
Go at first light, or don't bother.
Koggala's stilt fishermen are the image everyone arrives with — a row of men perched on poles in the shallows. The honest version: the ones sitting there in the middle of the day are largely posing for photographs and will ask for money. The real thing happens at dawn, before the vans come. Ask us the night before and we will tell you where they actually are that week.
The reason the hotel is where it is.
The lake is far bigger than it looks from the road — mangrove channels, small islands, cinnamon smallholdings and a lot of birds. A boat goes out from our own jetty; first light is when the water is glass and the birds are up. Madol Duwa, the island from Martin Wickramasinghe's novel, is out there too.

Built around the house Wickramasinghe grew up in, with a collection of rural tools, masks, puppets and everyday objects from village life. It is a short hop from here and genuinely worth an hour, even if you have never read him.
Virgin White Tea, picked without being touched.
A working estate known for a white tea harvested so that no hand touches the leaf between bush and cup. They walk you through it and you taste at the end. The most interesting tea visit on this stretch of coast.
11.1 km, and worth timing properly.
The Dutch fort is the region's set piece — ramparts, Cargills-era buildings, small museums and a lot of jewellery shops. Go late afternoon and stay for sunset on the walls; the middle of the day inside those walls is hot and crowded.
Choose carefully.
There are several along this coast and they are not equal. Some are genuine conservation projects; others keep turtles in small tanks for photographs. Ask us which one to go to rather than stopping at the first sign you see.
Kayaks go from the deck, and the boat for the lake safari leaves from our own jetty — no drive, no booking desk, no minibus. First light is when the water is flat and the birds are up, which is also the hour the stilt fishermen are real.
There is no restaurant strip in Koggala itself — that is part of why it is quiet. Most eating out happens at Habaraduwa (2.3 km), Thalpe (4.1 km) or Ahangama (6.9 km), and Galle Fort (11.1 km) has the widest choice. We cook here every night, so many guests eat in and go out once or twice. Ask the desk what is currently good rather than trusting a two-year-old review.
Distances by road, not as the crow flies. A tuk-tuk to Habaraduwa or Thalpe is a few minutes; Galle Fort is around half an hour depending on the coast road.
Plenty of guests do one thing from the list above and spend the rest of the week here. That is a legitimate way to use Koggala.
